I am taking some risk by setting up this presentation. These pictures and the actual meat/beef section at the Cuzco food market are very graphic. I will start by mentioning that I am a vegetarian. Somehow I didn’t feel disgusted by the scenery, I was amazed how clean the place is, there weren’t the mass clouds of flies as I anticipated to see. I saw an abundance of tasty goodies there. The market place was loud, colorful and vibrant. People were setting their goodies, negotiating, smiling. The small kids were running in the aisles from one vendor to another, probably seeing the relatives or the other children to play with. The whole atmosphere was bright and healthy. In the meat aisle I noticed a dog pilfered a juicy piece of meat off the counter while the girl was chatting with her friends.
Hi Natalia! Loved the post. I have seen these markets in Peru too. They smell terrible, from what I remember. I am going back to Peru in a few weeks for some medical mission work then on to Machu Picchu, which I keep missing because someone always got sick! No one can get sick this time!! I love your pictures. Isn’t Peru great?
Good luck! Stay well and enjoy your trip!
I really need to go vegetarian. Great little article and rather inspiring to change my ways x
I applaud you for this post. There is no need to hide or mask one culture from another. The Cuzco Food Market makes so much better use of meat than the North American diet does with so much waste. If you are going to sacrifice a life – you must make it count. We waste far too much. Bravo. (I really like the black and white photos!)
What are these heads with the teeth? I can’t figure out what animal they are.
I’d like to know as well.
Caws, i guess.
